Maria LoTempio - Plastic Surgery for Woman

As a woman gets older, her skin loses elasticity and wrinkles begin to form. Her skin also begins to sag, forming jowls and a droop under the chin and on the neck. Because this is a gradual process, women have trouble determining exactly what it is about their face that has changed. In patient consultations they describe to Dr. LoTempio that they “need a little freshening” or that when they look in the mirror, they “look tired” or “fatigued.” It is at this point that she discusses with the patient how a face, brow, or neck lift, either individually or in combination, can help freshen a woman's appearance.

FACE LIFT
With a face lift, an incision is made around the ear, along the hairline, to minimize scarring. Excess fat is removed, underlying muscles are tightened, and the skin is shifted and tightened to help restore a more youthful appearance. The procedure generally takes around three hours, though the timing varies for each patient. After the surgery, the face is bandaged for 24-48 hours and stitches are usually removed in one week. The most substantial bruising and swelling subsides in about two to three weeks, at which time most patients return to work.

BROW LIFT
A brow lift can help raise sagging eyebrows, reduce frown lines, and reduce horizontal creasing on the forehead—all natural signs of aging that can combine to make a woman look sad or angry when she is not feeling either of these emotions. The incisions required for a brow lift are quite small and placed along the hairline, so scarring is minimal and most patients are back to their usual routines in about two weeks.

NECK LIFT
Sometimes, the neck ages even before the rest of the face, creating wrinkling, sagging, and a “turkey wattle” appearance. A neck lift can reverse the appearance of these effects. Often, patients find that their appearance is refreshed and more youthful, but no one can quite put their finger on what has changed—truly a desirable goal in plastic surgery. The procedure varies depending on a patient's concerns, but generally an incision is made under the neck, and possibly in front of or behind the ears. Neck muscles are tightened, and excess fat is removed. Liposuction may be a part of this procedure. Most patients return to work in 10-14 days, and they can participate in strenuous activities after about three weeks.

These procedures are not a “fountain of youth” but many women find that a face lift, brow lift, or neck lift brings their appearance back in line with the way they feel inside.
