Lines and wrinkles are hallmarks of advancing age. Nevertheless, it can be extremely frustrating when they arrive, particularly if they cause you to look older than your years. Fortunately, there are now more ways to turn back the clock on the aging process than ever before, with esthetic treatments leading the way to younger, smoother, and rejuvenated skin.

Esthetics refers to the application of various minor minimally or non-invasive treatments to the skin in order to improve the appearance. There are lots of different esthetics options, with two of the newest being XeominⓇ and Jeuveau™.

What is XeominⓇ?

XeominⓇ is the latest neurotoxin treatment to enter the world of esthetics and is rapidly gaining popularity as an alternative to Botox. It has been approved by the FDA for multiple uses, including the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

Neurotoxins work by paralyzing the muscles that they are injected into, smoothing the overlying skin and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Neurotoxins are typically placed into the forehead and the skin around the eyes.

Just like Botox, XeominⓇ is injected directly into the patient’s face in the target area. However, since XeominⓇ is a pure product, it doesn’t have any added proteins that it needs to unravel before it can bond to the facial muscles and prevent them from contracting. This means that XeominⓇ starts to work a little quicker than Botox, and the effects are usually visible within around 5 days. The optimal result should be reached 10 days after having the XeominⓇ injected and this could last for up to 6 months before further treatment is required.

Since XeominⓇ is an injectable treatment, many patients opt to have a local anesthetic ahead of their treatment. Nevertheless, the procedure is carried out using an ultra-fine needle, ensuring that there is no scarring and many patients don’t feel any pain, even without an anesthetic. You may experience a little redness and swell around the injection sites, but this usually disappears within a day or two.

What is Jeuveau™?

Jeuveau™ is another popular injectable treatment that is designed to improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines and in particular, the glabellar lines. These are the little wrinkles that form between your eyebrows and can make you look much older than you actually are.

Like XeominⓇ, Jeuveau™ is also FDA-approved. However, Jeuveau™ uses botulinum toxin type A, aka Botox, to deliver the aesthetic results for which it is well known. Again, this works by preventing the facial muscles from contracting, ensuring that the overlying skin cannot wrinkle up, and creating a smoother, younger-looking forehead.

​​​​​​​The application of Jeuveau™ is the same as other injectables. An ultra-fine needle is used to inject very small amounts of neurotoxin into the muscle beneath the skin at predetermined locations. A little topical anesthetic can be used if needed. The entire process usually takes less than an hour and there is no downtime. Red pinprick marks and some localized swelling are fairly normal and should resolve themselves within 48 hours. The final result of your treatment should be visible in under a week, and you should be able to sustain this for between 4 and 6 months before more treatment is needed.
